So often we ask ourselves why suffering happens. Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do we suffer life’s storms?
The reality is that even Jesus suffered. Our perfect, sinless, Son of God endured suffering while He walked this earth.
Yet there is a God ordained reason for suffering. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all come, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”
There it is! Why do we suffer? Because suffering produces compassion within us, and compassion allows us the ability to comfort one another in times of trouble.
Suffering isn’t easy. It is not something any of us would desire to encounter. But we need to be reminded that when we do suffer and face those times when life appears to turn completely upside down, it is then that we develop the character of compassion and comfort. It is even then that our character is refined to be more like Jesus.
