“He never promised that the cross would not get heavy
And the hill would not be hard to climb
He never offered our victories without fighting
But he said help would always come in time
Just remember when you’re standing in the valley of decision
And the adversary says give in
Just hold on, our Lord will show up
And he will take you through the fire again” -Through the Fire by the Crabb Family
There are days when this chorus plays over and over in my mind. Days come when worry and doubt fill my mind. I feel insecure in my husband’s love for me, I feel like I’m failing at being a parent, I question my purpose in life, I feel I lack talent, I feel like I’m worthless. The enemy likes to fire those darts at me. He attacks when I’m tired, weak, ill, frustrated, and overwhelmed. He tries to get a foothold in my mind. He wants me to believe the lies he has created to use against me. If I’m not careful, I start to believe the lies that the enemy is using against me. Even on days like those…especially on days like those, Jesus shows up in my life and pulls me out of that pit. He reminds me that He never promised life would be easy in this world, but He did promise me that He would carry me through.
Jesus faced the same darts we face in this sin filled world. He was mocked, attacked, doubted, and beaten down. He knew that we too would face the same battles. He assures us in John 16:33 that He has been right where we are on those days. “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” Jesus overcame this world. He faced trials and sorrows while on this earth, and He knew that we too would face those same challenges. Yet, He wants to give us hope. He will walk beside us and give us peace. He will guide us, we just have to have faith.
Faith. Such a small word, and so very powerful. I decided in order to better understand the word…Faith, I needed to study faith. I found that the very definition of faith is, trust in something. In the case of our Lord, it is trust in someone. Faith means: certainty, assurance, confidence, acceptance, trust, belief, conviction, reliance, and loyalty to name just a few synonyms. So, if we ponder faith, then it comes down to having certainty. When we have faith, we have absolute confidence. It was after looking at these meanings of the word that I was able to piece together my true understanding of faith in God. I have absolute certainty in God. I believe the promises that He has provided to me in His word, and I have confidence in Him. I trust in Him with a strong conviction, and I realize that the only way I can survive in this world is by relying completely on Him.
So why does doubt creep into my mind? Why does it attack yours? I think the reality is that when we take our eyes off of God, and we begin to rely on ourselves, rather than completely and totally on God…it’s then that the enemy attacks. He preys on our weak points. Women are emotional creatures. God created us to be loving, gentle, kind, compassionate, and nurturing. The enemy…and our society, use those special traits against us. We are attacked with accusations of weakness because we shed tears. We are attacked with worthlessness because we desire to be part of a fellowship. We are attacked with inadequacy when we are unable to solve a problem on our own. The enemy fires dart after dart. If you and I don’t reach out to God, if we don’t call Jesus to shelter us from the attacks, and believe the promises He has given us, we begin to buckle from the wounds.
When we believe in God, and when we trust him with complete certainty to shelter us in the battle, He will take those darts for us. He is strong when we are weak. It is God alone who can remove our feelings of doubt, fear, inadequacy, and worthlessness. He knows that it is often a difficult battle. Faith comes from believing, not necessarily from seeing. God says in John 20:29 “Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” He tells us that He will bless us, care for us, and protect us, if we simply have faith. All we have to do is believe.
Sweet sister, you and I are made in God’s image. We are daughters of the King of Kings! When times become difficult, and the cross we must bear in this life becomes too heavy, we have to stop trying to fight under our own power. We have to put our absolute faith in God. It is then that He will take us through the fire, and one day He will take us on to paradise with Him.
Dear Lord Jesus, please help me to trust in you in all circumstances. Let me put my absolute confidence in Your abilities to fight the attacks I face in this world. Lord you never promised that the cross would not get heavy, but you promised you would take me through. Thank you Lord for loving me. In Jesus name, Amen.
