One of my favorite Christmas songs has for many years caused me to think more deeply about the reality of the greatness embodied by that tiny body when Jesus was born. For some, Mary Did You Know is a question which most certainly never needed to be asked. Of course Mary knew that Jesus would be the Savior of the world. God sent an angel to Mary in Luke 1:31-33 to tell her, “And behold you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Mary was assured that this child…Jesus, would be the Son of God, and that with God, nothing will be impossible. So yes, Mary did know that her baby body would be Lord of all creation. My intrigue, and time spent deep in thought comes from the rest of the miracles Jesus performed that are listed in this song.
Mary was chosen by God to be the mother to the only begotten Son of God. She was chosen worthy by God to carry such a blessing, and to help to raise Him into the man that God would use to save our world. While Mary was told much by the angel messenger that God sent to reassure her, how much would should truly be able to comprehend before it happened? “Mary did you know that your Baby Boy would one day walk on water?” How could she have known that? God had amazing plans for Jesus while He walked on this earth. Jesus performed miracle after miracle right among the people. I really don’t think Mary could have comprehended all that Jesus would do. Yes, she knew He would be great…He would rule nations, and His kingdom would never end. Did she know that by His touch, His voice, or simply His presence her Baby Boy would give sight to a blind man? Did she know that the deaf would hear, and the dead would live again? More importantly, do you know?
Here is how I see it. Whether Mary did or did not know all of these details really isn’t want matters as we celebrate Christmas through this amazing song. What matters is that we believe that Jesus did each of these things mentioned We must embrace the reality that Mary’s Baby Boy walked where angels trod…He does on this very day and you read these words. Do you believe it? What about the reality that when Mary kissed that sweet little baby, she kissed the face of God. Do you believe it? I know that I do. What makes this song so meaningful to me at Christmas has nothing to do with Mary necessarily. Rather, it has everything to do with you and me. Mary knew amazing wonders of which we will never know. Dear sister, consider yourself Mary. Put yourself in her shoes and ask yourself…did you know that Jesus would calm the raging storms with His hand? Will you embrace Jesus as the Deliverer who will deliver you? Dear sister, I pray that this Christmas you know…Jesus is the Great I AM. No longer is He a little baby, but He can still deliver you. I pray dear sister that you know.
